WEEK FOUR : DIRECTING AND EDITING

Heya,

This week we were concentrating on editing and directing; two very crucial parts of film making.

We did a task of splitting into two groups and having to recreate a casting interview, which I took part in on the role of the director. It was a daunting task as it was in front of the whole group; but we all learnt some valuable lessons on how to handle people in the industry due to the different scenarios e.g difficult actors. Here is a picture of one of our tutors, TJ, being a roadman actor in a casting:

We also did a task of having to organise people into scenes silently. This was interesting as it allowed us to see the different ways of communication between cast and crew as well as showing the smaller ways of making the audience aware of what you are trying to portray. Here is a picture of two people being arranged to show a first date:

We also had two industry professionals come in: Guy Myhill as a director and Julian Quantrill as an editor. We had a very detailed question and answer session which lasted about two hours, within which we all asked at least one question.

I really enjoyed this week as they are both areas of my interest. I found that I found it easier to contribute my ideas, which is a sign that I am getting closer to my arts award challenge. I was also able to really develop my professional challenge as editing was one of the areas I wanted to find more out about was really fantastic. The part I found most interesting was the relationship between the director and the editor and how that dynamic worked, as we had both sides of the party to discuss it; so that is something I will take away as a step closer to my professional arts award challenge as it has deepened my understanding of the editing role within the industry.
